Enrichment Day

A One+ hosted an event at a high school local to the site project. The event was aimed at Year 8 pupils and the day was split into five workshops each an hour long.

Each session started with a short introduction to the company and described what we do and who we are. We then introduced the kids to the ‘Bridge Building Activity’ they would be doing. There was only one rule with the bridges and that was the length of the bridge, this was so the testing area could be set-up prior to the kids coming in.

The kids then had 30 minutes to assemble their paper bridges before testing began. Once the kids were building, the STEM ambassadors walked around the tables to give the kids ideas and to promote the kids to think about the strongest way to build their bridge and also helped get the kids to work as a team.

Once the time was up and the bridges were built, it was time to test the bridges. We did this first by using little weights the school has provided but soon came to the conclusion that there were not enough weights to pull down the bridges. We had to improvise with filling milk bottles with water to find out who has the strongest bridge.

After testing all of the bridges, we had a prize giving to the winning team and then answered any questions the children had about our jobs, site project or engineering in general.

Overall, the day was a success with great feedback from the school and the pupils.
